Reading a bunch of stuff about explicit images being deleted off cloud storage, I found myself wondering what happened to encryption. We can (using entirely free and open source software) pack files into encrypted archives, protected by passwords or certificates. Those encrypted archives are then immune to the depredations of content-killing bots.

... The downside is that they can't be shared as easily. But that's not a big issue for backups and can be worked around for small scale sharing. Moreover, commercial solutions are widespread; its the basis of managing content that is locked unless you've paid for it.

And yet, it is never mentioned.

comments

Y'know, I hate writing 'about me' posts but given the circumstances, I shall try. I am female, nearing 40 years old and have been in fandom for more than two decades. I am also a single mother, have three cats and live in Australia.

Fandomwise, I started out by reading my older sister's paper zines. Next I dabbled a little in Usenet, then first wrote fic on mailing lists, endured through egroups and yahoogroups, hung around on bulletin boards and forums, and never quite settled on a blogging site. I was there on ff.net for their first purge but wasn't active for LJ's Strikethrough. Personal concerns kept me mostly inactive for some years so when I was looking for an active fandom community again, I was a little lost. Eventually, desperation for fan content drove me onto tumblr and I was able to re-engage again. Now, well, I'm not planning to drop my tumblr (cat pictures!) but I am not inclined to invest more into it.

My always and forever fandoms are Blakes7, Classic Who, Stargate, MCU Loki, MCU Ironman and Jane Austen.

An incomplete list of other fandoms which I participate/d in to varying degrees: Buffy, Firefly, Star Trek, Starwars, Pern, Miraculous Ladybug*, She-ra (2018 reboot), all the rest of the MCU and the associated Netflix series, Wheel of Time, Evangelion.

My non-fandom interests (all of which I might post about) are substantial - from sociology to geology, from cutting edge tech to old fashioned hand quilting and from photography to feminism. I also collect dolls, mostly asian ball-jointed dolls (abjds). I crochet (& collect yarn), embroider (& collect thread) and sew (& collect fabric). I have recently been focused on collecting seeds for my garden and discovering that I have more of a green thumb than I thought.

I used to work as IT support, sometimes dabble in programing, built my first website before css was a thing (and hand-coded all the html for it!) Twenty years ago, I was absurdly proud of making a little animated gif of a hatching dragon. None of the other sites for that particular webring had such a thing! 😂 ... I still dabble in image manipulation, but make no claims of being an artist.

And yes, I have ADHD. I am also battling depression and anxiety and I recently got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. All those may show up in personal posts, alongside snippets of my kids' craziness.

Lastly, I am an aromantic bisexual, forever against censorship and have no sympathy with exclusionists or antis of any flavour. That too might show up in my posts.

...
* I currently run the Miraculous Ladybug comm, allthemiraculous.

comments
